NHL trade deadline: date, Swedish time and trade rules

What changes at the deadline, and why do clubs exchange players for picks? The reported 2027 date and real Swedish examples from the trade market.

The trade deadline is the NHL’s final ordinary trading day before the stretch run and Stanley Cup Playoffs. Clubs use it to strengthen their roster or exchange players for assets such as draft picks. Trades can also happen well before deadline day.

When is the 2027 NHL trade deadline?

For 2026/27, Daily Faceoff, citing The Athletic, has reported Monday, March 1, 2027. That is a reported date, rather than an NHL confirmation in that source.

The usual cutoff is 3 p.m. Eastern Time, which corresponds to 9 p.m. in Sweden on March 1. Nearby spring dates can have a different time difference because North America and Sweden change their clocks on different days. The date and Swedish cutoff should therefore be checked each season.

Can a player be traded after the deadline?

A trade can still be completed after the deadline, but a player acquired then is normally ineligible for that year’s Stanley Cup Playoffs with his new club. That makes the cutoff significant for teams seeking playoff reinforcements. A deal submitted before the cutoff but announced later is a different situation.

What can clubs exchange?

Deals can include NHL players, rights to younger players and future draft picks. A conditional pick changes when an agreed condition is met. Acquiring a first-round pick therefore does not mean knowing which player will eventually be selected.

Our draft archive separates a selection from the player later chosen. The NHL draft guide explains rounds and selection order.

Nyquist in 2019: a player for future picks

San Jose acquired Gustav Nyquist from Detroit at the 2019 deadline. Detroit received picks involving conditions. The deal illustrates exchanging an immediately available player for assets that can be used in later seasons.

After the trade, Nyquist recorded 11 points in 19 regular-season games for San Jose: 6 goals and 5 assists. His 2018/19 season record covers both Detroit and San Jose.

Important trades can happen much earlier

Pittsburgh acquired Carl Hagelin from Anaheim on January 16, 2016, sending David Perron and Adam Clendening the other way. That trade came earlier in the season.

Hagelin’s 2015/16 season and the 2016 playoffs follow the move. Keep regular-season and playoff records separate when comparing his appearances before and after a trade.

The cap and contract clauses affect deals

A team must accommodate the player’s cap charge. Clubs can agree to retained salary under league rules, while a player’s trade protection can restrict possible moves. An expiring contract alone does not make a player free to choose a new club during the season.

Our salary-cap guide explains cap hit and space. Waivers are a different process that can transfer an existing contract without clubs negotiating the same kind of return.
