Swedish fathers and sons in the NHL

Michael Nylander saw both William and Alexander reach the NHL. Mikael Lindholm spent one season in the league, while his son Elias has built a considerably longer NHL career. Some Swedish fathers and sons have played for the same club in different years. Ulf and Jonathan Dahlén are one example: both represented the San Jose Sharks.

International allegiances can also differ across generations. Ulf Samuelsson played for Sweden, while his sons Philip and Henrik represented the USA. The same distinction applies to Sweden’s Kjell Samuelsson and his son Mattias, who has played for the USA. Our NHL fathers and sons directory compares each player’s actual NHL seasons, games, goals and points. No grandchild of a Swedish NHL player has made it to the NHL yet.

Hugo Carlsson – Anders Carlsson’s grandson

Hugo Carlsson, born in 2010, is the grandson of Anders ”Masken” Carlsson. After playing for Leksand, he was accepted into Östersunds IK’s hockey academy for autumn 2026, joining its U18 Regional setup. Who knows, perhaps Hugo Carlsson will become the first Swedish NHL player whose grandfather also played in the league?
