Defenceman Nicklas Lidström was 31 years old when the 2001-2002 season began, his 11th in the NHL, and played it for Detroit Red Wings. He played 78 of a possible 82 games and scored 9 goals and 50 assists for 59 points, 0.76 points per game. That was 5th among the Swedes and 58th in the NHL. He also won the Swedish assist race. The season ended with Nicklas Lidström winning the Stanley Cup with Detroit Red Wings against Carolina Hurricanes, after 23 playoff games and 16 points. He also won Conn Smythe Trophy, the first Swede ever to do it. He also won James Norris Memorial Trophy, the first since Nicklas Lidström in 2001.
